Secure your home Wi-Fi
Two passwords protect your home network — the Wi-Fi password everyone uses to join, and the router's hidden admin password. Set both strong, once.
Which is easier for you?
Open your internet company's app
Most providers — Xfinity, AT&T, Verizon, Spectrum — have a free app that runs your home network. Install it from your app store and sign in.
On your screen: Your provider's app on the home screen Find your Wi-Fi settings
Look for Wi-Fi, Network, or Internet inside the app.
On your screen: The Wi-Fi section of the app Set a strong Wi-Fi password
Make sure joining your Wi-Fi requires a password. If it's weak or widely shared, change it — and save the new one in your password manager.
On your screen: The "change Wi-Fi password" screen Change the router's admin password
Find admin, router password, or account settings and change it from any factory default. This is separate from the Wi-Fi password — save it too.
On your screen: The admin / router password setting
Find the router's address and login
On the sticker on your router, look for a web address (often numbers like 192.168.x.x) and the default login.
On your screen: The sticker on the back of the router Open it in your web browser
Type that address into your browser and sign in with the login from the sticker.
On your screen: The router login page in a browser Set a strong Wi-Fi password
Open Wireless or Wi-Fi settings and set a strong password to join the network. Save it in your password manager.
On your screen: The wireless password field Change the admin password
Open Administration or System and change the login password away from the factory default. Save it too.
On your screen: The admin password setting
If your screen looks a little different, don't worry. Every router and app is laid out a bit differently. Look for "Wi-Fi password" and "admin" or "router password."
