Turn on automatic updates
Most updates quietly fix the security holes criminals rely on. Switch updates to automatic once, and your device protects itself from then on.
First, which device?
Open Software Update
Open Settings, tap General, then Software Update.
On your screen: Settings → General → Software Update Turn on Automatic Updates
Tap Automatic Updates and switch on both Download and Install. Your phone now updates itself overnight.
On your screen: The Automatic Updates switches turned on Turn on automatic app updates
Open Settings, tap Apps (or App Store), and switch on App Updates.
On your screen: The "App Updates" toggle on
Open System update
Open Settings, scroll to System, then System update (on some phones it's Settings → Software update). Turn on automatic updating if it's offered.
On your screen: The System update screen Turn on auto-updates for your apps
Open the Play Store, tap your picture, then Settings → Network preferences → Auto-update apps, and choose Over Wi-Fi only.
On your screen: The "Auto-update apps" choice
Open Windows Update
Click Start, open Settings, then Windows Update.
On your screen: The Windows Update screen Turn on the latest updates
Switch on Get the latest updates as soon as they're available. Windows will install updates on its own from now on.
On your screen: The "latest updates" toggle on
Open Software Update
Click the Apple menu, choose System Settings, then General → Software Update.
On your screen: General → Software Update on a Mac Turn on Automatic updates
Click the i beside Automatic updates and switch everything on, including security updates.
On your screen: The Automatic updates options switched on
If your screen looks a little different, don't worry. These settings sometimes move between versions. Look for the words "Software Update" or "Automatic Updates."
