Do a free security checkup
Big companies build a guided checkup right into your account. It reviews your settings, flags anything risky in plain language, and it's free.
First, which account?
Open your Google Account
Sign in to Gmail, tap your picture in the top corner, and choose Manage your Google Account.
On your screen: The menu showing "Manage your Google Account" Go to Security
Choose Security from the list down the side.
On your screen: The "Security" item in the Google Account menu Run the Security Checkup
Tap Security Checkup. Google walks you through it and marks each item with a green check or a warning to fix.
On your screen: The "Security Checkup" card with a green shield Clear out what you don't recognize
Review your devices and recent activity — remove anything that isn't you. Then check third-party access and remove any app you don't use. Do this once every three months.
On your screen: The list of signed-in devices
Open Settings
Tap the menu (the three lines), then Settings & privacy, then Settings.
On your screen: The "Settings & privacy" menu open Run the Privacy Checkup
Find Privacy Checkup and tap through it. It covers who can see your posts and how to keep your account secure.
On your screen: The "Privacy Checkup" tiles Set who can see your posts
Set your posts to Friends, not Public — unless you mean to share with everyone.
On your screen: The audience set to "Friends" Check where you're logged in
In Security, open Where you're logged in and log out anything you don't recognize.
On your screen: The list of active logins
Open Settings and tap your name
At the very top of Settings, tap your name.
On your screen: Your name at the top of Settings Go to Sign-In & Security
Tap Sign-In & Security to see how your Apple Account is protected and turn on extra protection if offered.
On your screen: The "Sign-In & Security" screen Review your devices
Scroll down to see every device signed in to your account. Remove any you no longer use.
On your screen: The device list at the bottom of your account page
If your screen looks a little different, don't worry. Companies move these menus around. Look for the same words — "Security" and "Checkup" are what you're after.
